Anopheles maculipennis s.l. (L)

In the coverage area of this key 7 species of the Maculipennis complex is known to be present. These can be separated with the patterns on the eggs but molecular analyses give much more certain results.
Throught Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco and Tunisia only Anopheles labranchiae is present.

Setae 2-IV and 2-V with 7 to 23 branches are important characters. Due to overlapping values the members of the Maculipennis complex are not always identifiable. Egg ornamentation is more reliable.

Anopheles atroparvus Meigen, 1927 Type-loc: van Thiel
Setae 2-IV and 2-V with 6 to 22 branches

Anopheles beklemishevi Stegnii & Kabanova, 1976 Type-loc: not designated (present in Finland, Sweden)
Larva have not been described.

Anopheles daciae Linton, Nicolescu & Harbach, 2004 Type-loc: Germany (molecular analyses of ITS2 gene region should be performed)
Larva have not been described.

Anopheles labranchiae Falleroni, 1926 Type-loc: Italy Setae 2-IV and 2-V with 4 to 13 branches

Anopheles maculipennis s.s. Meigen, 1818 Type-loc: Germany Setae 2-IV and 2-V with 7 to 23 branches

Anopheles melanoon Hackett, 1934 Type-loc: Italy Setae 2-IV and 2-V with 16 to 23 branches

Anopheles messeae Falleroni, 1926 Type-loc: Italy Setae 2-IV and 2-V with 11 to 27 branches
